
Dick Verdult contributed a work to the exhibition ‘Cave Myths’ at Quetzal called ¿Yucatan?. It conflates representations of the mythical Quetzal bird, an ear and a cave. The title refers to the historical misunderstanding of local Mayan language by the Spanish colonizers, who upon asking ‘What is this area called’, were answered ‘Yucatan’, meaning ‘I don’t understand what you are saying’.
